Bruins beat Devils, 3-1
It was nothing short of a complete reversal. Given a second chance to control their playoff destiny, the Boston Bruins hit their mark, taking an impressive 3-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils, who had sent the Bruins to a 5-2 defeat less than 24 hours before. Toronto's blowout victory over the Ottawa Senators allowed the Bruins the opportunity to take the Northeast Division by winning their final game of the regular season, and they delivered. The win also clinched the No. 2 spot in the Eastern Conference for Boston and sets up a first round match-up with the No. 7 Montreal Canadiens. The Bruins finished the season with 104 points. The NHL will announce the Bruins' schedule for the first round sometime this evening. "This was a big game for us," said coach Mike Sullivan to NESN. "We were a little bit disappointed with yesterday's effort, but all year long the guys have responded when a game came up that was really important to us. The guys really stepped up." Travis Green gave the Bruins the all-important first goal in the game's opening minute.Glen Murray forechecked hard in the left corner and knocked the puck loose to Patrice Bergeron on the back boards. Bergeron fired on net and the rebound popped out to Green in the slot, who buried it top corner at 0:57. Less than two minutes later, the Bruins' pushed their lead to 2-0 with a power play goal. Nick Boynton took a slap shot from the point and the rebound went right in front, where Mike Knuble and Michael Nylander both hacked at it. The puck then deflected out to the side of the net, about two feet from the goal line. Glen Murray stepped in and snapped a laser of a wrist shot in the top corner that eluded a diving Martin Brodeur at 2:51. The Bruins completed their first period trifecta at 15:17 on Sergei Samsonov's 17th of the season. Nick Boynton won a battle for a loose puck in the Bruins' end and made an outlet pass to Nylander who carried it up ice. Nylander gained the zone on the left wing and passed to Samsonov. Nylander then drove to the net and Samsonov after a couple of quick dribbles fired a low shot that snuck through the maze of legs in front, settling inside the right post to make it 3-0. Jamie Langenbrunner scored a power play goal at 11:53 of the third period to make it 3-1, but Andrew Raycroft shut them down after that. Raycroft finished up the game 13 saves on 14 shots.

Game Notes: The Bruins outshot the Devils 10-1 in the opening twenty minutesThe Bruins went 1-for-6 on the power play, while New Jersey went 1-for-5Brodeur stopped 21-of-23 shotsThe Bruins finished the year with a 41-19-15-7 record.
